Oral Cancer Detection

1. Oral Cancer Screening:

Oral Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the mouth and throat. We perform a thorough oral cancer exam during your regular dental checkups because early detection can save your life.

Some of the warning signs are:

  1. A red, white, or discolored patch or lump in your mouth.
  2. A sore or ulcer that bleeds easily or that doesn’t heal within 2-3 weeks.
  3. An area that has thickened, raised, or become hard.
  4. A rough patch of tissue.
  5. Difficulty chewing or swallowing.
  6. The development of a chronic sore throat or hoarseness.

2. VELscope:

If you have a history of cancer in your family and have a concern for early detection, in addition to our regular periodic exams we offer a sophisticated technology called VELscope which helps us identify diseased tissue deep below the surface long before it’s visible. Early detection can lead to an 80% chance of a complete cure.

VELscope uses a harmless blue light that is absorbed by the molecules in your mouth. The exam is safe, painless and only takes a few minutes. Normal healthy tissue emits an apple green glow. Diseased tissue will appear dark green or black. VELscope does not definitively diagnose cancer, but it alerts us to areas of concern earlier than ever before. If we find a suspicious area, we will talk to you about the next steps. A VELscope exam showing normal, healthy tissue can give you instant peace of mind.
